How Shopify App Store search ranks apps

Shopify does not publish a ranking formula. It has said a few things on the record, though, and much of what circulates about App Store search is guesswork. This guide separates the two, then shows how to measure where your own app stands.

Updated

What Shopify has said

  • Merchant behavior counts. Since February 2023, search uses what merchants do with the results after a search. Matching the words of the search still informs results, and Shopify said keyword stuffing would have less impact.
  • Smaller apps get a chance. The same announcement described a mechanism that lifts smaller apps gaining traction, and warned that rankings would move more from day to day.
  • Reviews count. Positive reviews make an app appear higher in search results and category pages.
  • Built for Shopify counts. Apps with the badge appear higher in search rankings, although the boost is not reserved to them. Since October 30, 2025, they also get the homepage's featured header and better positions on some category pages.
  • Brand searches favor the brand. Since November 18, 2024, an app that strongly matches a search for its name is shown above the ads.
  • Category details are searchable. Since November 21, 2024, merchants can search and browse by the structured features of a category.

What Shopify has not confirmed

You will read that installs, uninstall rates or the age of reviews decide your rank, that results are personalized for each merchant, or that a chat-style search picks apps for merchants. None of it is in Shopify's documentation. The only personalization Shopify describes is the first collection on the homepage and on category pages. Treat the rest as hypotheses to test, not rules.

Ads sit next to the organic results

Search results carry up to four ads on desktop and three on mobile, each with an ad badge. You pay per click; the auction weighs your bid and how relevant your app is to the search, so relevant apps pay less for the same keyword. The minimum budget is 5 dollars a day. Shopify has not said that buying ads changes your organic position.

What you control

  • Your listing: the name, the introduction, the details, the feature list and the five search terms. See the listing guide for every field and limit.
  • Your reviews: how and when you ask. See how to get reviews within Shopify's rules.
  • Built for Shopify: the entry thresholds and the technical requirements are published.

Measure your real positions

Guessing where you rank for a search is easy to get wrong. Shopify gives you the real figure: when you add a Google Analytics 4 measurement ID to your listing, every visit carries the place it came from.

ParameterWhat it tells you
surface_typeWhere the merchant found you: search, search_ad, category, collection, home and others.
surface_detailFor a search, the words the merchant typed.
surface_inter_position, surface_intra_positionThe section and the slot where your app was shown at that moment.

Add them in GA4 as event-scoped custom dimensions; they can take up to 24 hours to appear. Read them by country and by language: the same app often ranks very differently for the same words in two markets.

Luseri reads these parameters for you and lists the searches that brought merchants to your listing, with the position you held, next to your category rank, recorded every day.

Questions

Does keyword stuffing still work?
Shopify said in 2023 that it would have less impact, and its listing rules forbid excessive marketing keywords and keywords added to the subtitle to improve search. It can get a listing rejected.
Does Built for Shopify improve ranking?
Yes. Shopify states that Built for Shopify apps appear higher in App Store search, and gives them featured places on the homepage and some category pages.
Do ads improve my organic ranking?
Shopify has not said so. Ads are shown in their own slots, with a badge, and an app that strongly matches a brand search is shown above them.
Why does my rank change every day?
Shopify said in 2023 that rankings would move more from day to day, because search now uses how merchants react to the results. Follow the trend over weeks rather than a single day.
