Shopify App Pricing: how app billing works in 2026

In May 2026, Shopify renamed Managed Pricing to Shopify App Pricing and made it the default way to charge merchants. Plans are set in the Partner Dashboard and Shopify handles the rest. Here is what it supports, what it does not, and what changes for the data you rely on.

Updated

What it is

With Shopify App Pricing, you set your plans, prices and trials in the Partner Dashboard, and Shopify creates the subscription when a merchant approves a plan. Merchants choose on a plan page that Shopify hosts in their admin. The Billing API still works but is now legacy, and an app that opts into App Pricing can no longer create new recurring charges through it.

New public apps get it by default when it supports their pricing model; existing apps can opt in from their listing's pricing settings, after removing incompatible Billing API plans.

Plans and charges

  • Up to eight public plans. Private plans are unlimited since September 21, 2026, with up to eight offered to the same store.
  • Free plans, free trials, and a 0-dollar private plan for testing.
  • Recurring billing: monthly, yearly, or monthly with a yearly discount.
  • Usage billing, reported through the App Events API: fixed, graduated or volume pricing, up to five meters per plan and six tiers per meter, billed monthly.
  • Plans can combine a recurring fee and usage charges.

What it does not support

  • One-time purchases.
  • Capped amounts and caps on usage charges.
  • Prices in another currency than the US dollar. Merchants billed in a supported local currency pay the converted amount; for prices set in local currencies, Shopify points to its Billing API.
  • Pricing models other than recurring fees, usage, or both.

Subscription data without webhooks

Since April 28, 2026, Shopify App Pricing sends no webhooks for subscription changes. To know where a store stands, Shopify points to the Partner API:

  • activeSubscription(appId:, shopId:) returns a store's current subscription, or nothing if it has none. It works for public apps.
  • The historical events query returns subscription changes, installs, uninstalls, charges and earnings: the last 30 days by default, 365 days at most, 250 results per page.
  • After a merchant approves a plan, Shopify redirects them to your app with the plan_handle of the chosen plan.

See the Partner API guide for access and permissions, and how to calculate MRR from these events.

Changes since May 2026

  • May 12: Managed Pricing becomes Shopify App Pricing, with usage charges through the App Events API.
  • July 9: more plans per app, no-charge testing of plans, negative and fractional app events.
  • September 21: unlimited private plans, and plans targeted at specific stores.
  • September 29: existing Billing API subscriptions can move to App Pricing without merchants approving again.

None of these announcements changes the revenue share Shopify takes. See Shopify's revenue share in 2026.

Questions

Is Shopify App Pricing the same as Managed Pricing?
Yes. Shopify renamed Managed Pricing to Shopify App Pricing on May 12, 2026, and added usage-based charges.
Can I sell one-time purchases with App Pricing?
No. App Pricing supports recurring fees and usage charges, not one-time purchases.
Can I set prices in euros?
Not in App Pricing: prices are set in US dollars, and merchants billed in a supported local currency pay the converted amount.
How do I know when a merchant cancels?
Not through webhooks anymore: since April 28, 2026, read subscription changes from the Partner API's historical events, or check a store with activeSubscription.
