Shopify app reviews removed: what happened in 2026 and what you can do
Since July 6, 2026, Shopify has been unpublishing App Store reviews that fail its trust checks, genuine ones included by its own admission, and AppStorePulse, a tool that reads every App Store listing daily, counted about 30,500 reviews removed in July alone. Shopify does not say which reviews went, so you rebuild the list yourself and appeal through Shopify Support with the shop URL of each review.

What happened, date by date
Shopify has tightened its review rules in steps since 2025; the July 2026 sweep also reached old reviews from long-time merchants.
| Date | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| April 9, 2025 | Ratings start weighing trust signals: reviews from lower-trust shops count for less and may be unpublished. | Shopify changelog |
| May 15, 2025 | Shopify archives a large number of outdated, unhelpful and untrusted reviews, with no appeal possible. | Shopify changelog |
| July 17, 2025 | Reviews from stores on a trial or discounted plan, or closed, are archived until the store pays full price or reopens. | Shopify changelog |
| March 9, 2026 | Shopify staff announce a dedicated taskforce on fake reviews. | Shopify forum |
| July 6, 2026 | Requirement 1.3 takes effect. Apps found incentivizing reviews lose a significant portion of them, and wider authenticity checks run on old and new reviews. | Shopify changelog |
| July 16 to 20, 2026 | Developers report sudden drops: 47 to 37 reviews on one app, 37 to 17 on another, more than 60 on a third. | Shopify forum |
| July 18, 2026 | Shopify staff write that a rollout that day incorrectly unpublished some merchant reviews, and that a fix is under way. | Shopify forum |
| August 1, 2026 | AppStorePulse counts about 30,500 reviews removed in July, nearly 10 times June's volume, against 30,832 posted. | AppStorePulse |
| September 2, 2026 | AppStorePulse counts about 1,200 reviews removed in August, below June's 3,200. | AppStorePulse |
| September 3, 2026 | Shopify says it adjusted its signals after partner appeals: some reviews may return, others may go. Staff add the next day that the assessment has no end date. | Shopify forum |
Shopify warned on July 6 that genuine apps could lose reviews too, because untrusted reviewers review many apps to look legitimate. AppStorePulse's numbers are outside estimates, the sum of daily drops in each live app's review count; Shopify has published no figure.
Built for Shopify: what a drop can cost
Built for Shopify, Shopify's quality badge, requires at least five reviews and a minimum recent rating that Shopify does not publish. Both are checked automatically: an app that fails one of them for 60 days loses the badge, and gets it back automatically once it meets the bar again. The checklist is on the Distribution page of the Partner Dashboard.
On Shopify's forum, a developer wrote on August 11, 2026 that four reviews removed on July 6 had left the app below five, and that an email received on July 27 gave a deadline of September 20, 2026 to keep the badge. That date applied to that app; Shopify has announced no common deadline. More in our Built for Shopify guide.
What Shopify's review policy allows and forbids
You may ask any merchant for a review in neutral words once they have used your app. Anything that rewards, pressures or steers the rating is forbidden.
| Practice | Allowed? | Where Shopify says it |
|---|---|---|
| Asking in neutral words after real use, such as "How's your experience? Leave a review" | Yes | Changelog, July 6, 2026 |
| Asking after a support conversation | Yes | Manage app reviews |
| Asking for a positive or 5-star review | No | Manage app reviews |
| Any reward, or a feature unlocked or withheld, in the app or outside it | No | Requirement 1.3.1 |
| Asking during install or onboarding | No | Manage app reviews |
| Asking from admin, Sidekick or checkout extensions | No | Requirements 2.2.6, 2.2.9, 5.6.2 |
| Emailing merchants who did not agree to your emails | No | Manage app reviews |
| Pressing a merchant to change a negative review | No. After fixing the problem, you may ask them to consider it, without pressure or reward | Manage app reviews |
| Reviews written by you or your staff, or bought, on your app or another | No, Shopify removes them | Manage app reviews |
Only merchants who have your app installed, or uninstalled it less than 45 days ago, can leave a review. Sanctions go from removing reviews to a lower ranking, unpublishing the app and, in severe cases, closing the Partner account. On July 9, 2026, a developer whose review request flow Shopify had flagged as non-compliant reported losing about 185 reviews at once.
How the rating is calculated
Your rating is not an average of stars. Shopify weights it toward recent, useful and trustworthy reviews and, since April 9, 2025, toward trusted shops. Unpublished reviews count neither in the rating nor in the total, and the formula is not public.
On March 10, 2026, a developer reported on Shopify's forum that one 1-star review took the app from 4.8 to 4.7, and that later 5-star reviews did not bring it back. Shopify staff wrote on September 8, 2026 that detection weighs the merchant's background and review behavior, and that false positives will happen. Positive reviews also lift an app in search results and category pages, Shopify says (see how App Store search ranks apps).
How to find out which reviews disappeared
Shopify does not give you the list: it says it may not notify you of a removal, and on August 4, 2026 a staff member wrote that it cannot provide a review-by-review breakdown. The Partner API has no reviews either. A developer shared this method on Shopify's forum on July 17, 2026:
- Gather Shopify's review notification emails: one arrives for each published review, with the store name, the rating and the text.
- Copy every page of your live listing's reviews, at apps.shopify.com/your-app/reviews.
- Compare the two: reviews in your emails that are no longer on the listing are the ones that went.
- To prove a review was public on a given date, use past snapshots of your listing on the Wayback Machine (web.archive.org).
- Check each missing review against your records: merchants still installed and paying are your strongest appeal cases.
Two other cases look like removals: reviews archived under the July 2025 rules, which return when the store pays full price or reopens, and reviews that the merchant sees as published while nobody else does, as developers described on the forum in September 2026.
Third-party tools that archive App Store reviews every day also show what disappeared:
| Tool | What it shows | Access, as of October 20, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Ranksy, review purge export | Emails a CSV of your reviews gone since July 6, 2026, with text, Shopify's review ID, store and time using the app. The link lasts 7 days. | Free, no account; removal alerts in its paid app |
| AppStorePulse | Lists each review removed from your listing, keeps its text, and gives its own verdict on why it went and whether to appeal. | Paid plans only |
| LetsMetrix | Deleted-review tracking, for any app. Developers on Shopify's forum pointed others to it from July 20, 2026. | Every plan, the free one included |
These tools only see reviews that were public when they read the listing.
Luseri records your listing's rating and number of reviews every day, next to those of up to six competitors, and rebuilds your rating history from the dates of your reviews. Once a week it re-reads the reviews it keeps: one Shopify has removed leaves the list, and the curve drops on the day the removal was seen. It does not list which reviews were removed.
How to appeal a removed review
The official route is Shopify Support: send the URL of each shop whose review was removed, a detailed explanation of why each review should stand, and your evidence. Partner Governance, the team that handles these cases, replies only when the evidence shows a mistake, and Shopify gives no timeline. A staff member confirmed this route on the forum on September 10, 2026.
What developers report on Shopify's forum, July to October 2026:
- Screenshots of the merchant's payments for the app and of your email exchanges with them led to reinstatements.
- Answers come from ecosystem-governance@shopify.com to your business email address; reply in that same thread.
- Many reviews came back on September 3 without any notice, and others with a reinstatement email on September 21 and 22. Some appeals were still open in early October.
Shopify staff wrote on August 4, 2026 that flagged reviews are not permanently deleted and may be published again automatically once trust is established. To report a suspicious review on another app, or a fake 1-star review on yours, use Shopify's partner violation form; Shopify does not share the outcome.
Preventing it: ask within the rules
Asking the right way will not stop every false positive, but it keeps your app out of the incentivized group, which loses a significant portion of its reviews. Shopify's advice:
- Call the Reviews API,
shopify.reviews.request(), right after the merchant gets value from your app. Shopify shows its window at most once every 60 days and three times a year per merchant, never on mobile and never in the first 24 hours. - Use the same neutral words for every merchant, with no reward and nothing held back.
- Outside the app, write only to merchants who agreed to your emails, and link to the review form by adding
#modal-show=WriteReviewModalto your listing's address. - Reply to negative reviews instead of trying to bury them.
Also keep every review notification email Shopify sends you: it is the basis of any appeal. More on timing and wording in how to get reviews for your Shopify app.
Questions
- Why did my Shopify app reviews disappear?
- Most likely Shopify's trust checks. Since July 6, 2026, Shopify unpublishes reviews that fail them, old ones included, and it says genuine apps can lose reviews when the reviewer's account looks untrustworthy. Reviews from stores on a trial or discounted plan, or from closed stores, can also be archived until the store pays full price or reopens.
- Does Shopify tell you which reviews were removed?
- No. Shopify says it may not notify you when a review is removed and does not give a review-by-review breakdown. Compare your review notification emails with your live listing, or use a third-party archive of App Store reviews.
- How do I get removed Shopify app reviews back?
- Contact Shopify Support with the shop URL of each review, a detailed explanation of why it should stand, and your evidence, such as the merchant's payments and your exchanges with them. Shopify gives no timeline; developers reported results after several weeks.
- Can removed reviews cost me the Built for Shopify badge?
- Yes. The badge needs at least five reviews and a minimum recent rating. An app that stays below either for 60 days loses the badge, and gets it back automatically once it meets the criteria again.
- Can I offer a discount or a free month for a Shopify app review?
- No. Requirement 1.3.1 forbids any incentive, and withholding features in exchange for a review, in the app or outside it. Apps found doing it lose a significant portion of their reviews and can be delisted.
