Shopify App Store keyword research: find the words, then track your rank

The best Shopify App Store keywords are the searches merchants already type: Shopify sends each one that leads to your listing to your Google Analytics 4, and the App Store's autocomplete shows popular ones. Put the strongest in your name, introduction, features and five search terms, then track your organic position on each one every day, in the App Store language that matters to you.

Where keywords count in your listing

Shopify does not publish how much each field weighs in search. It does publish the fields, their limits and the rules against keyword stuffing, as of October 20, 2026:

FieldLimitWhat Shopify says about keywords
App name30 characters or fewerLead with your own brand. The name must not be identical or confusingly similar to another app, developer, brand or Shopify product (rule 4.1.2).
App card subtitleNo limit publishedRule 4.4.1 forbids adding keywords to the subtitle to improve search performance. Summarize the app and its value instead.
App introduction100 charactersHighlight the benefits for merchants; avoid keyword stuffing and data claims.
App details500 charactersExplain what the app does; avoid excessive marketing keywords (rule 4.4.2) and keyword stuffing.
Feature list80 characters per featureDescribe what matters to merchants, not the technology behind it.
Structured featuresUp to 25 per categorySince November 21, 2024, merchants can search and browse apps by these category features.
Search termsUp to fiveComplete words, one idea per term: "email marketing" works, "email marketing for leads" does not. No character limit is published.

An English listing set as primary is translated automatically into eight languages (Brazilian Portuguese, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Simplified Chinese, Spanish and Swedish), search terms included, unless you write your own translation for that language. Your title tag and meta description are for Google and other search engines, not for App Store search.

Stuffing words in also pays less than it used to: since February 27, 2023, Shopify has said search uses how merchants react to the results, and that keyword stuffing has less impact. Every field and every rejection rule is in the listing guide.

Find the words merchants actually type

Start with your own data, then widen. Five search terms leave no room for words merchants do not use.

  1. Read the searches in your Google Analytics 4. Once your measurement ID is on your listing, each visit from organic search carries surface_type=search, and surface_detail holds the words the merchant typed. Keep the searches that lead to installs, not only to views. How to read them in GA4.
  2. Use the App Store autocomplete. Shopify's own ads documentation recommends typing your keywords into the App Store search box to see the popular terms it suggests, and doing the same on Google or with the free Google Keyword Planner.
  3. Read your competitors' listings. Their name, subtitle, introduction and features are public: note the words that the top apps for your main search share, and the ones none of them covers.
  4. Read reviews, yours and your competitors'. Merchants describe their problem in their own words, which are often not the words of your listing.
  5. If you run search ads, read Shopify's keyword data. When you create a search ad, Shopify recommends keywords drawn from signals such as your converting organic keywords and popular category keywords. Once the ad runs, its search term report lists the searches that matched your keywords, and Shopify suggests starting in broad match to discover them. How App Store ads work.

None of Shopify's developer documentation gives search volumes for App Store searches. Its ads documentation even warns that a suggested bid of 1 US dollar does not mean merchants search for that keyword. The volume and difficulty figures some tools show are their own estimates.

Why your rank moves, and why two readings disagree

Your position on a keyword moves every day because search reacts to merchants. In its February 27, 2023 announcement, Shopify said search would fold in how merchants interact with results, that a built-in mechanism helps smaller trending apps show up higher, and that developers should expect more day-to-day variability than before. Judge a change over a few weeks, not one morning.

Two people checking the same keyword on the same day can still see different ranks:

  • Ads sit in the results. Search results carry up to four ad slots on desktop and three on mobile, each with an ad badge. Count apps by hand and you count the ads; a tracker that leaves them out gives a better number for the same screen. Since November 18, 2024, an app that strongly matches a search for its own name is shown at the top, above the ads.
  • The App Store language changes the order. Shopify lists twenty languages a merchant can choose besides English, and English listings are translated automatically into eight of them, search terms included. On October 20, 2026, we checked the search "virtual try on" with ads left out: the same app was 28th with the App Store in English, 24th in French and 25th in German.
  • The position in your GA4 is taken at another moment, by another merchant, as the table below shows.

What Shopify has said about ranking, and what it has not, is in how App Store search ranks apps.

Tracked rank versus the position in GA4

A rank tracker and Google Analytics measure different things, and you need both. The tracker reads the results page; GA4 records where your app was when a merchant clicked it.

How the place is countedDepends on the tool; several keep ads apart from organic resultsThe results page number, then the slot on that page, counted left to right and top to bottom from 1. Shopify does not say whether ad slots are counted.
CompetitorsYes, when the tool follows themNo

Search results pages hold 24 apps, so a GA4 position converts to a rank as (page − 1) × 24 + slot. Averages from GA4 lean toward good positions, because a listing far down the results is rarely opened.

Rank tracking tools, as of October 20, 2026

If you used SASI, the Shopify App Store Index, plan to replace it. It belonged to Mantle, whose services stopped on August 14, 2026 (September 30 for Mantle Billing customers), and Mantle's wind-down FAQ, updated July 2, 2026, says SASI and App Store Analytics are winding down too. SASI's keyword tracker was used from inside a Mantle account. On October 20, 2026, the SASI site was still online and listing apps added the same day, with no closing notice and no published end date. The other tools, as described on their own sites that day:

Since Shopify publishes no App Store search volumes, every volume or difficulty figure is a tool's own estimate. AppStorePulse does not say how it computes its tiers; AppJubilee says it uses aggregated, anonymized data from its platform.

Luseri tracks up to 20 keywords you choose. Every day it reads the first 192 organic results, ads left out, in the App Store language you set for each keyword, and records your position and that of the competitors you follow; a keyword's history starts on the first day it was read. It does not estimate volume or difficulty. It suggests up to eight searches to track, drawn only from the searches that brought visits to your listing over 90 days and from the words your competitors put forward on their listings. Next to the tracked keywords, it lists the searches from your Google Analytics that brought merchants to your listing, with your position when they clicked.

Questions

How many search terms can a Shopify app have?
Up to five, according to Shopify's App Store listing best practices. Each must use complete words and cover a single idea: email marketing works, email marketing for leads does not. Shopify translates them along with the rest of an English listing.
How do I find keywords for my Shopify app?
Start with the searches Shopify sends to your Google Analytics 4 in the surface_detail parameter: they are the words merchants typed before opening your listing. Then use the App Store autocomplete, your competitors' listings and reviews, and, if you run search ads, Shopify's keyword recommendations and search term report.
Is there a free Shopify App Store rank tracker?
As of October 20, 2026, AppStorePulse and LetsMetrix have free plans limited to three keywords and 14 days of history, and AppJubilee has a free public directory of the top keywords per app. Your own Google Analytics 4 also records your position each time a merchant clicks through from search.
Does Shopify publish App Store keyword search volume?
Not in its developer documentation. Its ads documentation even warns that a suggested bid of 1 US dollar does not mean merchants search for a keyword. Volume and difficulty scores in third-party tools are their own estimates.
Why is my tracked rank different from what I see in the App Store?
Search results carry up to four ads on desktop and three on mobile, the App Store language changes the order, and rankings move from day to day. A tracker that leaves ads out and reads one language once a day will differ from a count made by hand.
