How to sell (or buy) a Shopify app: transfer, price and the numbers to prepare
Selling a Shopify app takes Shopify's written consent: its Partner Program Agreement cannot be transferred without it, an acquisition or a change of control counts as a transfer, and Shopify publishes no step-by-step procedure for moving an app. The price is usually a multiple of profit, and the only figures are those brokers publish about their own deals: as of October 20, 2026, Empire Flippers says it has sold Shopify apps at 23 to 39 times monthly net profit, and FE International puts apps sold inside platforms such as Shopify at 4 to 7 times adjusted earnings.

What Shopify says about transferring an app
Its contracts require its consent; its documentation does not describe the move. As of October 20, 2026:
| Document | What it says |
|---|---|
| Partner Program Agreement, section 9.7 (updated February 27, 2026) | A Partner cannot assign or transfer the agreement without Shopify's prior written consent, given or withheld at its sole discretion. An acquisition, a merger or a change of control counts as a transfer. The request goes to Shopify Support, from the Partner Dashboard. |
| API License and Terms of Use (updated October 7, 2026) | The same consent rule (section 14.6). API credentials are Shopify's property and may not be shared with a third party other than a service provider acting for you (section 2.1.5). |
| Developer changelog, March 30, 2026 | Each Partner organization has one Organization Owner, the only role that can transfer ownership of the organization. |
We found no page on shopify.dev or in the Help Center explaining how a public app moves to another Partner organization, or what goes with it: reviews, installs, earnings history, listing. Forums fill the gap. A developer reported on Shopify's community forum on August 12, 2021 that Partner Support had moved his app to another Partner account in a couple of weeks, settings kept. On Shopify's developer forum on December 18, 2025, a developer who is not Shopify staff answered that Partner Support needs the IDs of both accounts.
Two listings show what happened after a purchase, which is not a rule. On October 20, 2026, the app Loop bought in December 2024 is called "Track by Loop (formerly Wonderment)" and still shows Wonderment as developer, its October 5, 2020 launch date and 76 reviews. Alia's listing, after Dotdigital bought the company in March 2026, still shows Alia as developer, with 114 reviews.
What happens to the revenue share after a sale
Shopify's 0% on the first $1,000,000 is counted per developer, across all its Associated Developer Accounts, and Shopify names an acquisition as one way such accounts appear. As of October 20, 2026:
- The million is a lifetime amount, counted from January 1, 2025, over all Associated Developer Accounts together; payouts stay per Partner account.
- An Associated Developer controls the developer, is controlled by it or shares a common controller with it (control means owning 50% or more), or is designated by Shopify. The Help Center's examples include an app developer company acquiring another.
- A developer that earned $20 million or more through the App Store the previous year, or whose company makes $100 million or more with its affiliates, pays 15% on all app revenue.
Neither the revenue share page nor the agreement says how an app's past revenue counts once it changes owner. Each test looks at the developer, so a buyer should ask Partner Support in writing, before signing, which rate will apply. See Shopify's app revenue share.
What buyers look at
Recurring revenue they can verify, its trend, how long stores stay, and how much the app depends on Shopify and on you:
| What | What brokers say | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| MRR (monthly recurring revenue) and growth | Empire Flippers lists MRR, steady profit and the trend. FE International says businesses growing above about 20% a year with gross margins above 70% are sometimes priced on revenue | Partner API subscription events: how to calculate MRR |
| Churn and retention by cohort | Empire Flippers lists churn. FE International calls net revenue retention the main quality signal for subscription software | Measuring churn and the churn and LTV calculator |
| Revenue concentration | FE International counts customer concentration among the risks | The share of MRR paid by your largest stores |
| Reviews, rating and rank | Empire Flippers lists the number and quality of reviews and the App Store ranking | Your public listing |
| Platform dependency | FE International calls it the central diligence question for apps sold inside a platform: if the host can build the feature, the price reflects it | Shopify's terms and announcements |
| Age and owner time | Empire Flippers says buyers usually expect two years, and an app needing over 20 hours a week is hard to sell | Your own records |
Platform dependency is concrete on Shopify. Its agreement says app developers are not guaranteed a perpetual place on Shopify, and on April 24, 2025 Shopify announced that the first million at 0% would stop resetting each year. The founders of Tabarnapp, sold in 2022, gave that dependence as a reason to sell.
How the price is set
As a multiple of profit for most small apps, sometimes of revenue for fast-growing ones. No one publishes a figure for the Shopify app market as a whole: each firm below reports its own deals, measured its own way.
The profit used is often SDE (seller's discretionary earnings): what a single owner-operator takes from the business in a year, with the owner's pay and one-off costs added back. FE International uses SDE below about $5 million and EBITDA above.
| Who | Published | What it measures | Figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Empire Flippers | Updated November 19, 2024 | Shopify apps it sold, on average monthly net profit over 12 months | 23 to 39 times monthly net profit, about 1.9 to 3.25 times yearly profit |
| FE International | August 3, 2026 | Apps sold inside a platform such as Shopify or Salesforce, from more than 1,500 closed deals | 4.0 to 7.0 times adjusted earnings |
| Acquire.com | February 11, 2026 | Software businesses under $10 million sold on its marketplace, from data its customers report | Median of 3.9 times profit in 2024 and 2025; not specific to Shopify apps |
| Flippa | Updated July 24, 2026 | Software businesses sold on Flippa from January 1 to June 30, 2026 | 2.47 times profit on average, 4.06 for the top quarter; not specific to Shopify apps |
These figures measure different things, and an asking price on a marketplace is not a sale price. Part of the price can also depend on results after the sale (an earn-out): in Dotdigital's purchase of Alia, half of the maximum price depends on two more years of growth. For what apps earn in the first place, see how much Shopify apps make.
Where to sell a Shopify app
On a marketplace, through an advisor who looks for the buyer, or directly to a company that already sells to Shopify merchants, as in the three sales below. As of October 20, 2026:
| Who | Model | Seller fees it publishes | Conditions it states |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acquire.com | Marketplace for startups | $25 to $100 a month while listed, plus a closing fee of 8% under $250,000, 7% up to $1 million, 6% above, only if you sell; escrow included | 81 days on the market on average for deals reported in 2025 |
| Microns | Marketplace for small online businesses, with a Shopify apps category | No listing fee; success fee of 10% from $1,000, 8% from $10,000, 6% from $100,000 | Asking prices from $1,000 to $1 million; profitable, 5 months old or more |
| Empire Flippers | Marketplace that vets each business | $10,000 up to a $66,666.66 sale, then 15% of the price up to $700,000, 8% of the part up to $5 million, 2.5% above | $24,000 a year of net profit and 12 months of history |
| Flippa | Open marketplace | Paid listing packages and a success fee, by package and price range | Not stated for apps |
| FE International | M&A advisor | Not published on its website | Says it has completed more than 1,500 transactions |
Shopify app sales made public
Few sales of Shopify apps are announced, and fewer with a price. Three individual examples:
| Deal | Date | What was published |
|---|---|---|
| Staytuned bought Tabarnapp | November 22, 2022 | Four Shopify discount and upsell apps; no price in the press release. They Got Acquired reported in April 2024 over $1 million a year of revenue with 80% net margins, and a price in the mid-seven figures according to co-founder Derek Morin. |
| Loop bought Wonderment | December 10, 2024 | An order-tracking app for Shopify merchants; no price disclosed. |
| Dotdigital bought Alia Software | March 4, 2026 | A pop-up and email/SMS sign-up tool built only for Shopify merchants: $30 million in cash, plus up to $30 million over two years if growth holds. Over $8 million of forward-looking ARR at December 31, 2025 (about $1 million a year earlier), $4 million of 2025 revenue, over 2,700 customers; figures unaudited. |
The $30 million paid at closing is at most 3.75 times Alia's announced ARR (annual recurring revenue). Dotdigital says that if the full $60 million is paid, it will equate to at most two times forward-looking ARR. These are company deals at the top of the market, not a guide for a small app.
Preparing the sale, or checking before you buy
- Ask Shopify first: a request to Shopify Support from the Partner Dashboard, with a written answer on consent, what moves with the app and the buyer's revenue share rate.
- Export the records. In the Partner Dashboard, App distribution, choose the app, then Export: Current merchants (plan, install date, organic or ad install), Earnings and History arrive by email as CSV files. Payouts, then Export CSV, lists every payout. Shopify says the Payouts page is the accurate reference when figures disagree, and that Partner API transactions are for analytics.
- Rebuild the numbers a buyer will ask for from the Partner API events: MRR and what moved it, retention by install cohort, revenue per store. Count paying stores, not installs, since the Dev Dashboard counts development stores and stores without a plan (why the dashboards differ).
- List everything outside Shopify: code, hosting, domain, support inbox, third-party services, your weekly hours. Do not hand the app's API credentials to the buyer yourself: Shopify's API terms forbid it.
- Hold the money in escrow until the app has moved. Acquire.com includes it, and Empire Flippers recommends it for private sales.
If no sale happens and you stop, the agreement requires notice to merchants and Shopify's sunsetting steps: contact Support about 30 days ahead, limit the listing's visibility, send merchants at least two messages, cancel subscriptions, then uninstall.
Luseri reads your Partner account through the Partner API, with read-only access, and shows your MRR with what moved it (new subscribers, plan changes, cancellations, returning merchants), retention by install cohort and a page for each store: the figures a buyer will ask for, rebuilt from your own events.
Questions
- How much is my Shopify app worth?
- No one publishes a figure for the whole market. Brokers publish their own: Empire Flippers says it has sold Shopify apps at 23 to 39 times monthly net profit (article updated November 19, 2024), and FE International puts apps sold inside platforms such as Shopify at 4 to 7 times adjusted earnings (August 3, 2026). Where an app lands depends on verified recurring revenue, growth, retention, age, the owner's time and its dependence on Shopify.
- Can I transfer a Shopify app to another Partner account?
- Only with Shopify's agreement. The Partner Program Agreement cannot be assigned or transferred without Shopify's prior written consent, and an acquisition, a merger or a change of control counts as a transfer. The request goes to Shopify Support from the Partner Dashboard. Shopify publishes no step-by-step procedure; developers on its forums report that Partner Support handles the move.
- Do reviews and installs move with a sold Shopify app?
- Shopify's documentation does not say, as of October 20, 2026. After two public acquisitions, Loop's purchase of Wonderment and Dotdigital's purchase of Alia, the App Store listings still showed the original developer name and their reviews in October 2026. Ask Partner Support in writing before signing.
- Where can I sell a Shopify app?
- On marketplaces such as Acquire.com, Microns (which has a Shopify apps category), Flippa or Empire Flippers, through an advisor such as FE International, or directly to a company that sells to Shopify merchants. As of October 20, 2026, Acquire.com charges a closing fee of 6% to 8% of the price and Microns a success fee of 6% to 10%.
- Does the buyer of a Shopify app keep the 0% revenue share on the first $1 million?
- Shopify counts that million per developer, across all its associated accounts, and lists one app developer company acquiring another among the ways accounts become associated. It does not say how an app's past revenue counts after a sale. A buyer that earned $20 million or more through the App Store the previous year, or whose company makes $100 million or more, pays 15% on all app revenue.
