How to market a Shopify app: every channel, and how to measure it

Every install of a Shopify app happens on a Shopify surface, such as your App Store listing or Sidekick, the AI assistant in the Shopify admin. Marketing an app therefore comes down to ranking on those surfaces, sending outside traffic to your listing, and measuring each channel with the source Shopify attaches to every listing visit.

The channels at a glance

Shopify requires installs to start on its own services (rule 2.3.1), so every channel, inside or outside Shopify, ends on your listing or in Sidekick. The one figure Shopify has published is about search: in February 2020, it wrote that 60 percent of App Store installs came from searches. We found no newer one as of October 20, 2026.

App Store search

Shopify's search engine parses your listing to decide when to show your app, and since February 2023 it also uses what merchants do with the results. Shopify states that positive reviews and the Built for Shopify badge raise an app in search, and that traffic from outside Shopify can help your ranking; a significant amount of it can get an app listed in the homepage's Trending apps section.

The details are in four guides: how search ranks apps, every field of the listing, getting reviews within Shopify's rules and Built for Shopify. One condition comes first: only fully visible apps are indexed in App Store search, categories and outside search engines. An app with limited visibility can still be installed from its listing's address, but nobody finds it by searching.

Ads in the App Store and on Google

App Store ads appear in search results, on category pages and on the homepage, from 5 US dollars a day. You pay per click, and in search a relevant app pays less for the same keyword. Shopify credits an install to an ad within 30 days of the click, and full revenue results can take up to 64 days plus your free trial. The ads guide has the details.

Ads outside Shopify, such as Google Ads, must also send merchants to your listing, since the install starts there. Shopify's tracking page refers to Google Ads conversions tracked on the listing through Google Analytics 4 (GA4). Google's help describes the rest: link GA4 to Google Ads, mark an event such as shopify_app_install as a key event, and import it into Google Ads as a conversion.

Shopify's documentation does not mention UTM parameters, the utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign tags you add to a link. GA4 reads them from the address of any page it measures and shows them in its Traffic acquisition report, so tagged links to your listing should appear there. Check with one link before you rely on it.

Sidekick, Shopify's AI assistant

Since September 17, 2025, merchants can find, compare and install apps in Sidekick, the assistant built into the Shopify admin. Sidekick builds its app cards from your App Store listing content: up to three cards for a broad request, a single highlighted card for a strongly matched app, and comparisons that show Built for Shopify status.

Shopify gave three tips to appear there:

  • Enable Shopify-managed installation, where Shopify handles the install and the access your app declares in its configuration, so your app needs no OAuth redirect of its own.
  • Check that your listing is accurate, clear and well structured.
  • Earn Built for Shopify, which Shopify says improves ranking in both the App Store and Sidekick.

Shopify's Built for Shopify page also lists Sidekick among the surfaces opened by the "Increased visibility on key merchant surfaces" achievement, and notes that these surfaces are personalized for each merchant, so no app is guaranteed to appear.

In the forum thread that announced the feature, Shopify's replies said recommendations vary with the merchant's business and context, that ranking well in Sidekick is "very similar" to ranking well in the App Store, and that Shopify wants to give more visibility into installs happening outside the App Store. As of October 20, 2026, its tracking documentation lists no surface_type for Sidekick; an install made there still counts in your Partner Dashboard. On July 4, 2026, a developer reported on the same forum a fall in App Store search volume on the Ads dashboard since March 2026 and suspected AI assistants, with no proof.

Shopify's collections and picks

Shopify also places apps in sections it curates. Achievements listed on the Built for Shopify page make an app eligible, and Shopify keeps the choice.

PlacementHow an app gets there
In the spotlight, on the App Store homepagePicked every week by Shopify's app review team among apps in good Partner standing that meet the App Store requirements (storefront apps must also uninstall cleanly).
Story pages, across the App StoreMinimum installs, reviews and rating, plus a clean uninstall for storefront apps.
First collection on the homepage, "Picked for you" in the Shopify admin, SidekickThe "Increased visibility on key merchant surfaces" achievement, which also boosts search ranking. Personalized for each merchant.
Featured header of the homepageBuilt for Shopify apps, since October 30, 2025.
Partner-friendly Apps collectionPaid plans free for Partners on development stores; with manual billing, ask Shopify Support.

The minimums are those of Built for Shopify: 50 net installs from active stores on paid plans, 5 reviews, and a recent rating Shopify does not publish. Visits from these places arrive with surface_type set to home, collection or story, and surface_detail names the section or collection.

Partnerships: agencies, complementary apps and affiliates

Agencies and freelancers set up stores for merchants, and merchants find them in Shopify's Partner Directory by service, location, language or rating. Partner-friendly plans let these Partners use your paid plans at no charge on development stores, without changing your price for real stores.

If your app works with another one, the listing's Integrations field takes up to six entries, and another Shopify app belongs there only if you integrate with it directly. Visits from another app's listing arrive with surface_type=app_details and that listing's handle in surface_detail; visits from your partner page, which lists all your apps, as partners. Cross-promotion has limits: your listing must not mention your other apps, and admin and Sidekick extensions must not promote related apps (rules 2.2.6 and 2.2.9).

Shopify's Affiliate Program pays for merchants who buy a Shopify plan, not for app installs, even though it accepts app partners as affiliates. We found no Shopify program that pays for app installs as of October 20, 2026: developers who reward referrers run their own program with their own links. Tag those links with UTM parameters so GA4 can tell each partner apart.

Content, Google and communities

Fully visible listings are indexed by outside search engines, so your listing itself can appear in Google results. Shopify's marketing page lists the other outside channels: webinars, video tutorials that search engines index, email, social media retargeting, communities and press releases. Shopify also provides an App Store badge for your website, which should link to your listing.

Where Shopify app developers and merchants talk, as of October 20, 2026:

  • community.shopify.dev, Shopify's developer forum, which has a Shopify App Store category. Shopify's marketing page recommends joining it.
  • The Shopify Community forums, for merchants. Shopify suggests helping merchants there and mentioning your app when it solves their problem, while warning that promotion can be treated as spam.
  • Reddit, which Shopify's page also names, including r/ShopifyAppDev for app developers.
  • Shopify App Founders Edition, a weekly newsletter for Shopify app founders, independent of Shopify. Its 46th issue came out on October 14, 2026.

The Shopify Partners Slack is no longer one of them: posts on Shopify's developer forum dated December 30, 2025 and March 29, 2026 say it was shut down and point to the forum instead.

Measure each channel, then what follows the install

  1. In the Partner Dashboard (Apps, your app, Distribution, Manage listing), paste your GA4 measurement ID and a Measurement Protocol API secret under Tracking information, so that completed installs arrive as shopify_app_install.
  2. In GA4, add surface_type, surface_detail and the two position parameters as event-scoped custom dimensions. They can take up to 24 hours to appear.
  3. shopify_app_install carries no surface_type: tie each install to its source through the Landing page + query string of the visit, as the GA4 guide explains.
  4. Export "Current merchants" from the Partner Dashboard: for each store, the plan, the install date, and whether the install was organic or came from a paid ad.

An install is not a customer yet. Shopify's ads FAQ warns that revenue for a given day keeps rising for months, as merchants finish their free trial, upgrade and pay. Compare channels on the merchants who pay after their trial and stay, not on installs: see churn and uninstall reasons.

Luseri reads your listing's Google Analytics and splits its views between search, ads, categories and other App Store pages, lists the searches that led to confirmed installs, and shows retention by install cohort from your Partner account.

Questions

What is the best way to market a Shopify app?
Start with App Store search, which Shopify said in 2020 brought 60 percent of App Store installs: a complete listing, search terms that match what merchants type, and reviews. Then add channels you can measure, such as App Store ads, Google Ads and outside content that links to your listing, and compare them on paying merchants rather than installs.
How do I get the first customers for a new Shopify app?
Make the listing fully visible and complete, since only fully visible apps appear in App Store search and categories. Ask early users for reviews in neutral words, help merchants in the Shopify Community forums without spamming them, offer Partner-friendly plans so agencies can try the app on development stores, and consider App Store ads, which start at 5 US dollars a day.
How does Sidekick choose which apps to recommend?
Shopify has not published a formula. Sidekick builds its cards from App Store listing content and its recommendations depend on the merchant's request and business. Shopify advises enabling Shopify-managed installation, keeping the listing accurate and earning Built for Shopify, which it says improves ranking in both the App Store and Sidekick.
Can I see which channel brought each install?
Partly. With Google Analytics 4 on your listing, App Store visits carry the type of page and the search they came from, and UTM parameters identify your own links. The Partner Dashboard's Current merchants export says whether each install was organic or came from a paid ad. Shopify's tracking documentation has no source value for Sidekick yet.
Does Shopify have an affiliate program for app developers?
Shopify's Affiliate Program pays for merchants who buy a Shopify plan, not for app installs. As of October 20, 2026, Shopify documents no program that pays for app installs, so developers who reward referrers run their own program with their own tracked links.
