The Shopify app review process in 2026: timing, steps and checklist

Shopify's documentation gives no review time. Shopify staff put the wait for a reviewer at about 30 days in spring 2026, then said in June that it had become much faster; developers on Shopify's forum reported one to three weeks between August and October 2026. Every resubmission sends the app back to the end of the queue, so passing on the first round saves the most time.

How long does Shopify app review take?

There is no official duration. As of October 20, 2026, Shopify's review and submission pages give no number of days, only a warning that errors, beta versions and incomplete submissions delay the review. The figures below come from Shopify staff on its developer forum and from developers' reports.

  • Developers on the forum quote Shopify's submission email and interface as saying a review "can take up to 2 weeks" (posts from April and May 2026). Shopify's documentation does not give that figure.
  • February 26, 2026: Shopify staff warned that review times were longer than usual, and that resubmitting moves an app to the back of the queue.
  • March 25, 2026: a Shopify staff member put the waiting time for submissions at about 30 days. On May 11, he gave the same figure for getting a reviewer assigned, adding that it was speeding up.
  • April 20, 2026: Shopify explained the delays by a sharp rise in submissions that its process was not keeping up with, and launched new review tools (see below).
  • June 10, 2026: Shopify staff said that after significant improvements, reviewers were being assigned much faster.
  • October 13, 2026: asked for a current estimate, Shopify staff answered that it varies with the number of apps in the queue.

What developers report on Shopify's developer forum:

PostedReported wait
March 28, 2026Submitted February 19, reviewer assigned March 28, approved two hours later: five to six weeks in all.
April 2026Many apps waiting five to ten weeks for a reviewer, and apps resubmitted after a small fix waiting weeks again.
August 18, 2026One developer: usually one to three weeks for their apps.
August 26, 2026Approved three weeks after submission, after two review rounds one week apart.
October 5 and 6, 2026Submitted September 23, first reviewer feedback 12 days later, then back in the queue after the fix.

These are individual reports, not statistics. One developer was also told by Shopify support that the queue is not strictly first in, first out (May 4, 2026), which would explain why waits differ from one app to the next.

The review steps and statuses

An app moves through statuses shown in the status banner of its App Store review page, and Shopify emails the app submission contact at each change.

StatusWhat it meansWhat you do
DraftNot submitted yet. The review page lists issues to fix and automated checks to run.Fix them, then click Submit your app.
SubmittedIn the queue. Developers report the banner reads "We're assigning a reviewer to your submission" until a reviewer picks it up.Wait. You can withdraw at any time, but submitting again starts a new wait.
PausedCore requirements are missing, so the reviewer cannot test the app. An email lists the changes.Make them, then click Submit fixes.
ReviewedThe reviewer found issues to fix or discuss.Reply, fix every flagged requirement, then resubmit.
PublishedApproved, and visible in the App Store by default.Expect later quality checks.
SuspendedYou cannot resubmit before the date shown in the banner.See the last section.

Since April 20, 2026, review feedback lives in the Partner Dashboard under App > Distribution. Each requirement has its own status, the reviewer's comments and a notes field to reply, ask a question or dispute a failure, and resubmission stays blocked until all of them are resolved. Emails still announce each change of state (submitted, in review, changes requested, approved, rejected). Once you submit fixes, the app goes back into the general review queue, Shopify staff confirmed on October 7, 2026.

App Store requirements: the pre-submission checklist

Shopify reviews only production-ready apps, and public apps with limited visibility (unlisted) must meet the same requirements as listed ones. These points come from Shopify's App Store requirements and submission pages:

AreaWhat Shopify requires
Install and loginInstall starts from a Shopify surface, never from a myshopify.com address typed by the merchant. OAuth runs right after install and reinstall, before any other screen, then the merchant lands in the app. Embedded apps use session tokens and work without third-party cookies or local storage, including in Chrome's incognito mode.
BillingEvery charge goes through Shopify App Pricing or the Billing API, and merchants can upgrade or downgrade without contacting you or reinstalling. Test the plans on a development store; with the Billing API, set the test field back to false afterwards. See how Shopify App Pricing works.
Privacy webhooksSubscribe to the three mandatory compliance webhooks, customers/data_request, customers/redact and shop/redact. Answer with a 200-series status, and with 401 when the HMAC signature is invalid.
APIs and securityNew public apps use only the GraphQL Admin API (since April 1, 2025) and the latest App Bridge, request only the access scopes they need, and use a valid TLS certificate.
ErrorsNo 404, 500 or 300 errors, no interface bug that blocks the review, and data kept in sync with Shopify.
StorefrontTheme changes only through theme app extensions, with setup instructions. Shopify's best practices also ask that an app not lower the store's Lighthouse performance score by more than 10 points.
ConfigurationApp URLs without the word "Shopify" or "Example", an API contact email without "Shopify", an icon of 1200 by 1200 pixels in JPEG or PNG, and an emergency developer contact (email and phone).
Customer dataIf the app uses protected customer data, request access before submitting: it cannot be requested while the app is in review.
ListingComplete prices, only in the pricing section, no statistics or reviews in the text or images, and no Shopify trademarks in the icon or screenshots. See every listing field and rule.
Review materialA screencast in English, or with English subtitles, showing setup and the main features, plus test credentials that work and open the whole app.

Why Shopify apps get rejected

Shopify lists six common review problems. Billing problems can be fixed without resubmitting; the others require a new submission, and so another wait in the queue.

CategoryProblemResubmission needed
BillingWrong pricing information, plans merchants cannot switch between, charges outside Shopify's billingNo
InstallationNo immediate redirect to the OAuth screen, a fatal error after install, a broken reinstallYes
EmbeddingThe app switches between embedded and non-embedded versionsYes
InterfaceAn interface broken on install, web errors such as 404, 500 or 300Yes
TestingMissing testing instructions or credentials, an unfinished or unstable appYes
Online storeNo theme app extensions, widgets that fail on the storefrontYes

On Shopify's developer forum, several rejections came down to the submission rather than the code: a test password that changed during the wait (May 7, 2026), an API key cut off when pasted into the test account field (May 9, 2026), a screencast link the reviewers could not open (March 19, 2026), unclear review instructions (August 26, 2026). One install bug appeared only in incognito mode (April 8, 2026). Developers also report reviewers stopping at the first failure, so other issues only surfaced in the next round (April 28 and May 10, 2026).

How to speed up the review

You cannot shorten the queue, except with Built for Shopify status; what you control is how many times you go through it. Each point below comes from Shopify's pages or staff:

  • Run the automated checks on the App Store review page; they must pass before you submit. They test authentication and the redirect right after install, reinstall, the App Bridge version and the listing (since April 30, 2025), and theme app extensions and more listing rules (since April 20, 2026).
  • Run the AI self-review launched on April 20, 2026. With Shopify's AI Toolkit installed in your coding assistant, the /shopify-app-store-review command checks your code against the requirements that code can show and reports what will likely pass or fail. It skips the listing and live behavior, does not guarantee approval, and uses tokens from your model provider. Running it while you wait keeps your place in the queue.
  • Fix every flagged requirement before resubmitting. Shopify calls this the biggest thing you can do to speed up your review.
  • Do not resubmit or contact support to check your status: resubmitting sends you to the back of the queue, and status requests go to the same team (February 26, 2026).
  • When you resubmit, update your test instructions to say what you fixed (October 7, 2026).
  • Add noreply@shopify.com to your allowed senders, so review emails reach your app submission contact.
  • Developers with Built for Shopify status join a priority review queue for their next apps. One developer with a badged app still reported a four-week wait (March 16, 2026).

Suspensions, and checks after approval

Shopify can temporarily suspend a submission when the reviewer's issues stay unfixed after two or more exchanges, when each resubmission brings more issues, when review emails go unanswered, or when you refuse the outcome of an exemption request. The suspension affects only that app, and repeated suspensions last longer.

Approval is not the last check. A published app can be selected for a quality check against the current requirements: 7 days to respond before it is demoted, 30 days to make the changes before it may be unpublished.

From launch day, Luseri can follow your app's installs and revenue, read from your Partner account, and its App Store listing, so the first weeks after approval are on record.

Questions

How long does Shopify app review take in 2026?
Shopify publishes no fixed time. Shopify staff put the wait for a reviewer at about 30 days in March and May 2026, then said in June that assignment had become much faster. Developers on Shopify's forum reported one to three weeks between August and October 2026, and every resubmission adds another wait in the queue.
What does "We're assigning a reviewer to your submission" mean?
The app is in the Submitted status, waiting in the queue for a reviewer. That is normal, and withdrawing then submitting again only moves it to the back of the queue.
Do I lose my place in the queue if I resubmit?
Yes. A resubmission, including one that fixes a reviewer's issues, puts the app back in the general review queue. Running Shopify's AI self-review while you wait does not.
Do unlisted Shopify apps go through app review?
Shopify's review documentation says every submitted app goes through app review, and that its requirements are the same for fully visible and limited-visibility public apps. It does not describe a separate process for unlisted apps.
Why was my Shopify app rejected?
The common reasons Shopify lists are installation and OAuth errors, billing outside Shopify or plans that cannot be changed, web errors such as 404 or 500, apps switching between embedded and non-embedded, missing test instructions or credentials, and storefront changes made without theme app extensions.
