Shopify app developer deadlines: every dated change for 2026 and 2027

As of October 20, 2026, the next deadlines for a Shopify app are December 1, 2026 for Built for Shopify returns and subscription apps, January 1, 2027, when every public app must use expiring offline access tokens, January 16, 2027, when API version 2026-01 stops being served, and March 1, 2027, when script tags stop running on storefronts. Each date below comes from Shopify's developer changelog or documentation, and this page is checked against them every month.

Seven dated changes are announced after October 20, 2026. The two that switch something off are non-expiring tokens on January 1, 2027 and storefront script tags on March 1, 2027.

Announced, with no date as of October 20, 2026:

  • The Billing API has no end date. It is legacy since May 12, 2026, and moving to Shopify App Pricing is optional.
  • The Partner Dashboard has no end date. Shopify lists payouts, app history, distribution, listings and pricing as coming to the Dev Dashboard.
  • Requirement 4.1.2 on unique app names is enforced in waves, and each notified app gets its own deadline.
  • Identity verification for partners who send collaborator requests was to become mandatory "in the coming weeks" after July 9, 2026.
  • The useBuyerJourneyIntercept hook of checkout UI extensions, deprecated in version 2026-07, will be removed in a future version.

API versions supported on October 20, 2026

Four stable versions are supported: 2026-01, 2026-04, 2026-07 and 2026-10, the latest. Version 2027-01 is a release candidate, due on January 1, 2027.

Shopify releases a version every quarter, at 5 p.m. UTC on the first day of the quarter, and supports each one for at least 12 months. When a version is no longer served, Shopify falls forward: it answers with the oldest supported version, and webhook payloads follow the same rule. The X-Shopify-API-Version header of each response tells you which version answered. The Partner API is versioned on the same calendar.

Shopify CLI refuses to deploy versions older than 12 months, which is why UI extensions needed 2026-01 or later from October 1, 2026. By the same rule, an extension still on 2026-01 will be blocked once that version is more than 12 months old, in January 2027.

Version 2027-01 removes, among others, the automaticDiscounts query (use discountNodes with method:automatic), the metafieldInteger collection condition and the marketCurrencySettingsUpdate mutation. It also makes owner_type required on every metafield declaration of Checkout and Customer Account UI extensions, and deploys without it are blocked.

The REST Admin API has been legacy since October 1, 2024, and new public apps must be built only with the GraphQL Admin API since April 1, 2025 (requirement 2.2.4). Shopify's REST reference sets no cutoff for existing apps as of October 20, 2026.

Billing and revenue share

No billing deadline is set as of October 20, 2026. Requirement 1.2.1 asks App Store apps to charge through Shopify App Pricing or the Billing API, the Billing API is legacy but supported, and Shopify's billing docs say an existing integration does not need to migrate to keep running.

Once an app opts into Shopify App Pricing, it can no longer create new recurring charges through the Billing API. App Pricing sends no subscription webhooks since April 28, 2026, so subscription status comes from the Partner API. Plans, limits and what App Pricing does not support are in Shopify App Pricing explained.

Shopify's changelog announced no change to the revenue share in 2026. Since June 16, 2025, Shopify takes 0% on your first 1,000,000 US dollars of lifetime gross app revenue, counted from January 1, 2025, and 15% beyond, plus a 2.9% processing fee on all billing. See Shopify's app revenue share, or apply it to your numbers with the revenue share calculator.

Partner Dashboard, Dev Dashboard and Partner API

Shopify has announced no end date for the Partner Dashboard, but it is moving app monitoring to the Dev Dashboard step by step:

  • March 30, 2026: development, client and collaborator stores, team roles and organization settings move to the Dev Dashboard. Payouts, app distribution, theme submissions and referrals stay in the Partner Dashboard.
  • June 17, 2026: admin performance (LCP, INP and CLS at the 75th percentile) moves to the Dev Dashboard.
  • September 25, 2026: revenue, installs and uninstalls appear in the Dev Dashboard, which counts installs differently. See Dev Dashboard vs Partner Dashboard.
  • No date yet: distribution, app review, listings, pricing, app history and payouts.

In the Partner API, version 2026-07 added appSubscriptionCancel, which cancels a public app's subscription immediately or at the end of the billing cycle and needs the View financials permission. Uninstall reasons arrive with each uninstall event: see the Partner API guide and Shopify app uninstall reasons.

Luseri reads these events from the Partner API with read-only access, so the subscription changes that App Pricing no longer sends by webhook still show up in your MRR and uninstall reasons.

App Store rules and reviews

Five App Store requirements were added or tightened since April 2026: 1.1.15 on refunds, 2.2.8 and 2.2.9 on Sidekick extensions, 1.3 on reviews and 4.1.2 on names.

Requirement 1.3, in force since July 6, 2026, has the widest effect. Its rule 1.3.1 forbids any incentive for a review, inside or outside the app, and Shopify's stronger checks also unpublished genuine reviews, as it warned they would. What happened and how to appeal is in Shopify app reviews removed, and what you may still ask is in how to get Shopify app reviews. For submissions and audits, now handled in the Partner Dashboard, see the Shopify app review process.

Built for Shopify

Two Built for Shopify deadlines are open: December 1, 2026 for returns and subscription apps, and May 1, 2027 for the admin interface of every badged app. The entry thresholds have not moved: 50 net installs from active stores on paid plans, five reviews and a minimum recent rating that Shopify does not publish.

On August 1, 2026, Shopify relaxed three criteria for fulfillment services apps (5.8.2, 5.8.6 and 5.8.7), with no action needed. Since June 17, 2026, the Dev Dashboard shows a pass or fail status for each admin performance measure, using the same data the App Store uses. See Built for Shopify requirements.

How this page is kept current

It is checked every month against Shopify's developer changelog, where breaking changes carry the Action Required tag, and against the documentation pages in the sources below. Only dates Shopify has published are listed; when Shopify gives no date, the page says so.

Questions

When did Shopify API version 2025-10 stop working?
It stopped being served on October 16, 2026, at 15:00 UTC. Requests that still ask for 2025-10 are answered with the oldest supported version, 2026-01, which is served until January 16, 2027.
Is the Shopify Billing API being deprecated?
It is legacy, not retired. Since May 12, 2026, Shopify App Pricing is the default for new public apps and the Billing API appears as Manual Pricing (Legacy), but existing integrations keep working and Shopify has set no end date as of October 20, 2026.
When do Shopify offline access tokens have to expire?
New public apps must use expiring offline access tokens since April 1, 2026, and every public app must from January 1, 2027. The access token lasts 60 minutes and is renewed with a refresh token, without the merchant reinstalling the app.
When do Shopify script tags stop working?
Since October 1, 2026, apps can no longer create or update script tags, in any API version. Existing script tags stop running on storefronts on March 1, 2027; Shopify points to app embed blocks or web pixels instead.
Is the Shopify Partner Dashboard being shut down?
No end date has been announced as of October 20, 2026. Revenue and installs moved to the Dev Dashboard on September 25, 2026, and Shopify lists payouts and app history as coming there, without a date.
