How many apps are in the Shopify App Store?

Shopify's most recent dated figure, from its annual report, is more than 21,000 apps on December 31, 2025. Trackers that crawl the public listings counted between about 27,700 and 30,500 live apps at the end of summer 2026. App counts, as of October 20, 2026:

Luseri now keeps its own count. Once a day, its robot reads the App Store's public app sitemap, the list of listing addresses Shopify publishes for search engines, and counts one app per address, with the apps added and removed since the previous day: 29,018 on October 20, 2026. Every reading can be downloaded as a CSV file at luseri.com/data/shopify-app-store-index.csv, free to reuse with a link to this page.

Why the counts disagree

Most of the gap has a plain explanation:

  • Shopify's own pages lag behind. The App Store homepage still says "over 16,000 apps", the wording Shopify already used in its changelog on April 24, 2025, and shopify.com/about says 13,000+. Only the annual report puts a date on its number.
  • Live apps are not all apps. LetsMetrix counts 39,538 apps ever listed, of which 30,485 were still live and public on September 30, 2026.
  • Some apps are hidden from browsing. An app with limited visibility has a listing page and can be installed from it, but it does not appear in App Store search, on category pages or in search engines, so a crawler may or may not count it. Custom apps, built for one store or one Plus organization, are never listed.
  • Removals are measured differently. AppStorePulse counted 62 apps removed in July 2026 and 57 in August; LetsMetrix counted 1,471 apps delisted or deleted from July to September.
  • Coverage changes. LetsMetrix says part of its jump in launches in the second quarter of 2026 may come from wider crawl coverage; RevenueHunt notes about 2,800 launch dates clustered in May 2026.
  • The store moves fast. AppStorePulse's live count grew by 1,920 apps in August 2026 alone, so two snapshots a month apart cannot match.

How fast the App Store is growing

Every tracker sees launches accelerating in 2026. New apps per period, as of October 20, 2026:

PeriodNew appsSource
January to March 20261,875LetsMetrix
April to June 20265,558LetsMetrix
July 20262,318AppStorePulse
August 20261,854AppStorePulse
July to September 20265,681LetsMetrix

According to LetsMetrix, the second and third quarters of 2026 each added more apps than all of 2025. On October 5, 2026, developers on Shopify's forum discussed "around 1,600 apps in a single month", citing LetsMetrix; no Shopify employee replied with a figure. Shopify itself gives install growth instead: active app installs rose nearly 20% in the year before its April 28, 2026 post.

On the developer side, LetsMetrix counted 22,795 active developers on September 30, 2026 (19,055 three months earlier); 64% have a single app. Shopify gives no developer count in the pages cited here.

How much Shopify pays app developers

Shopify publishes one rounded total a year, in an announcement. Payouts to developers, as of October 20, 2026:

YearPaid to developersWhere Shopify said it
2024More than $1 billionDeveloper changelog, April 24, 2025
2025More than $1.3 billionShopify News, April 28, 2026

Both posts say "last year" rather than naming the year, and the 2026 post speaks of "the developers who build across its ecosystem". Shopify does not publish what an average or median app earns. RevenueHunt models that the top 1% of apps (225) take about 72% of revenue, from public prices and review signals, and calls it an estimate, not billing data. See how much Shopify apps make.

What Shopify keeps has changed twice. Revenue share rules, as of October 20, 2026:

SinceShopify's share
Before August 1, 202120%
August 1, 20210% on the first $1 million earned each year, 15% above
June 16, 20250% on the first $1 million of lifetime revenue, counted from January 1, 2025, 15% above

The 0% tier requires less than $20 million earned on the App Store the previous year, less than $100 million of company revenue, and a one-time $19 registration. A 2.9% processing fee applies to all billing on top. Details in Shopify's app revenue share.

Categories and how the App Store is organized

Shopify's documentation lists 7 categories, 32 subcategories and 122 tags, as of October 20, 2026. Of those tags, 32 are catch-alls named "Other". The categories are Sales channels, Finding products, Selling products, Orders and shipping, Store design, Marketing and conversion, and Store management. LetsMetrix's homepage counts 33 subcategories, one more than the documentation.

Each app needs one primary tag and can add a secondary one, plus up to 25 structured features per category field. Features can be changed at any time; changing category takes an appeal.

The most crowded tags by live apps on August 31, 2026, according to AppStorePulse (which calls them categories):

Built for Shopify and App Store ads

Shopify does not say, in the pages cited here, how many apps hold its Built for Shopify badge. Trackers count between 1,500 and 1,700:

  • AppStorePulse: 1,693 apps, 6.1% of live apps, on August 31, 2026.
  • RevenueHunt: 1,502 apps, 6.7% of live apps, in June 2026.
  • LetsMetrix, among active apps with 20 or more reviews on September 30, 2026: 1,321 with the badge and 1,854 without, with a survival rate of 96.9% against 71.9%.

Ads are sold per click, through a first-price auction, in three places: search results, category and subcategory pages, and the homepage, with 4 slots each on desktop and 3, 2 and 4 on mobile. Shopify does not advertise its own apps there, and its 2025 annual report lists App Store advertising among its sources of revenue. See Built for Shopify and Shopify App Store ads.

Reviews and ratings

Shopify publishes no total number of reviews. AppStorePulse counted 1,031,950 reviews on live apps on August 31, 2026, with an average rating of 4.67 for apps with at least 5 reviews. Reviews per month, as of October 20, 2026, according to AppStorePulse:

MonthReviews postedReviews removedNet change
July 202630,832About 30,500+305
August 202625,469About 1,200About +24,000

The July drop follows Shopify's announcement of July 6, 2026: a new rule against incentivized reviews and stronger detection of untrusted ones, with "a meaningful number" of reviews to be unpublished over the following weeks. Shopify gave no figure. The 30,500 is AppStorePulse's sum of decreases in listed review counts, which it attributes to Shopify; developers on Shopify's forum reported sudden drops from July 16, 2026. More in why reviews disappear.

Few apps collect many reviews. On September 30, 2026, LetsMetrix found that 18.3% of live apps had reached 10 reviews, 8.6% had reached 50 and 6.0% had reached 100. In June 2026, RevenueHunt counted 51% of live apps with no review at all.

How the rating works, according to Shopify:

  • It is not a simple average: it is weighted toward recent, useful and trustworthy reviews. Since April 9, 2025, trust signals count, and reviews from lower-trust shops weigh less.
  • Unpublished reviews count neither in the review total nor in the rating.
  • Since July 17, 2025, reviews from stores on a trial or discounted plan, or no longer active, are archived, and published again once the store pays for a full-priced plan or reactivates.
  • Only merchants who have the app installed, or who uninstalled it within the last 45 days, can leave a review. See how to get reviews for your app.

How many merchants use Shopify

Shopify does not give an exact number. Its 2025 annual report says it had "millions of merchants from more than 175 countries" on December 31, 2025, and its results of August 5, 2026 repeat "millions of businesses in 175+ countries". A precise merchant count found elsewhere is not a Shopify figure.

How to read these numbers

Only a few of these figures come from Shopify. The rest are measured from public listings, each with its own method:

FigurePublished byKind
Apps in the App StoreShopify, annual reportOfficial, once a year, rounded
Money paid to developersShopify, announcementsOfficial, once a year, rounded
Revenue share, categories, ad slots, rating rulesShopify, documentationOfficial rules
Live apps, launches, removals, Built for Shopify countAppStorePulse, LetsMetrix, RevenueHunt, AppNavigatorMeasured from public listings; methods differ

Quote a figure with its source and its date, and compare a tracker with itself over time rather than with another tracker: a gap of 3,000 apps between two crawls says more about their methods than about the App Store.

For a single app, the numbers that matter are closer to home. Luseri follows an app's rating, reviews and category rank every day, next to those of up to six competitors.
