Shopify app ideas: how to find a real gap and test it before you build

Shopify publishes no current list of the apps merchants want, so look for a need you can check in public: how many apps each App Store tag holds, what merchants miss in the 1 to 3 star reviews of the leading apps, what they ask on the Shopify Community, and what Shopify's developer changelog opens or closes. Judge each idea on demand, competition, feasibility and revenue, then talk to five merchants before you write code.

Where to look, and what each source tells you

Six public sources show a need before you write a line of code. None of them measures demand alone, so cross them:

SourceWhat it showsWatch out for
App Store category and tag pagesHow many apps a tag holds, and each app's rating, review count, price summary and Built for Shopify badgeCounts overlap between pages, and Shopify does not say how they are computed
Structured features on listingsThe features Shopify defines for a category, and which ones each app claimsEach developer picks its own
1 to 3 star reviews of the leading appsWhat merchants miss, in their own wordsOnly merchants who have the app, or removed it in the last 45 days, can review
Shopify Community, the merchants' forumMerchants asking whether an app exists, and the answers they getReplies often point to a feature Shopify already offers
Shopify's developer changelogNew APIs and surfaces, and deprecations with their datesA new native feature can also shrink a category
App Store search autocompletePopular searches related to a wordIt shows no search volume

Shopify's documentation splits the App Store into 7 categories, 32 subcategories and 122 tags, 32 of them catch-alls named "Other". On October 20, 2026, the 3D/AR/VR tag showed 373 apps, Image editor 406, Image gallery 258 and Video and livestream 310, while their subcategory, Images and media, showed 494. Compare a page with itself over time rather than adding pages up.

Since November 21, 2024, merchants can also search and browse apps by structured category feature. Each app picks up to 25 per category field, shown on its listing, so lining up the features of a tag's leaders shows what none of them claims.

An app's reviews page can be refined by rating and sorted from newest to oldest, and each review gives the store's country and how long it used the app. A complaint that recurs across several leading apps points to a need nobody meets well.

On the merchants' forum, the Shopify Apps board of community.shopify.com held 20,068 topics on October 20, 2026, and its Ask & Offer board is where merchants ask for app recommendations. Search for "is there an app" and read the replies. When a merchant asked on June 2, 2026 for an app that blocks orders outside a delivery radius, two replies pointed to Shopify's built-in local delivery, which can be limited to a set distance. When a wholesale merchant asked on July 23, 2026 how to verify tax-exempt certificates and professional licenses, a reply named existing apps for the certificates and said it had seen none that checks licenses against state databases, which share no common format or API.

Entries on shopify.dev/changelog carry tags such as Action required or Deprecated. Since June 17, 2026, every developer can build Sidekick app extensions, which let Shopify's AI assistant search an app's data and open its pages. Since October 1, 2026, apps can no longer create or update storefront script tags, which stop running on March 1, 2027, so features built on them must move to app embed blocks or web pixels. Every dated change is in Shopify app developer deadlines.

For searches, Shopify's ads documentation suggests typing a word in the App Store search box to see popular related searches, and using Google Keyword Planner. Neither gives App Store search volumes. If you already have an app, your Google Analytics 4 receives the words merchants typed before opening your listing (surface_detail). More in App Store keyword research.

What Shopify has said about merchants' needs

Shopify gives totals and directions, not a list of app types in demand. As of October 20, 2026:

  • April 28, 2026: more than 21,000 apps, and active app installs up nearly 20% in a year. The post credits innovation for opening "surface areas that didn't exist a year ago" but names no growing category.
  • July 28, 2026: Shopify's VP of Partnerships wrote that AI lowers the cost of building while the hardest problems stay, starting with what to build, and tied the growth of App Store installs to merchants who need help beyond their first steps.
  • Spring '26 Edition, the latest on shopify.com/editions: new places for apps, such as Sidekick working with apps and point of sale extensions that run offline. It also made features native, such as A/B tests on the online store and checkout, and B2B volume pricing and catalogs at no extra cost on the Basic, Grow and Advanced plans. Since October 1, 2026, apps can read these scheduled launches and tests, called Rollouts, through the Admin API.

Check every idea against the latest Edition: a feature Shopify includes at no extra cost is harder to sell as an app. Idea lists also age. In April 2016, Shopify's Apps Team listed six app ideas, among them an accessibility scanner and fraud detection; on October 20, 2026, the Accessibility tag held 156 apps and Fraud 307.

How to judge an idea

Score each idea on four criteria before you build anything:

CriterionWhat to checkCaution
DemandAutocomplete suggestions, forum threads, the number of reviews of existing appsListings show no install count, and unpublished reviews are left out: a review count is a clue, not a measure
CompetitionApps in the tag, ratings of the leaders, how many hold Built for Shopify, features Shopify offers nativelyBuilt for Shopify apps rank higher in search, and the badge needs, among other things, at least 50 net installs from active paid-plan stores and 5 reviews
FeasibilityThe APIs in Shopify's documentation, the App Store requirements, the Built for Shopify requirements for your categorySome app types cannot be listed at all
RevenueCompetitors' plans and prices, public on their listingsEvery App Store app must bill through Shopify

Competition is uneven. The most crowded tags, according to AppStorePulse, which counts public listings:

TagLive apps, August 31, 2026New apps in August 2026
Analytics1,337112
SEO95383
Chat92166
Shipping88545
Discounts85749

AppStorePulse counted 1,854 new apps across the App Store that month; Shopify's own counts are in Shopify App Store statistics.

Some ideas fail on feasibility whatever the demand. Shopify's App Store requirements bar apps that use no Shopify API (2.2.1), bypass Shopify's checkout or payment processing (1.1.2), connect to a point of sale system other than Shopify's (1.1.8), require a desktop app (1.1.12), provide capital funding (1.1.16) or bill outside Shopify (1.2.1). Built for Shopify adds rules in some categories: to earn it, a subscription app must use the selling plan and subscription contract APIs.

On revenue, Shopify App Pricing, the default for new public apps, handles free, monthly and annual plans and usage-based charges, with up to eight public plans; a one-time purchase needs the Billing API. Shopify keeps 0% of the first $1 million of lifetime revenue counted from January 1, 2025, then 15%, plus a 2.9% processing fee. See how to price your app and how much Shopify apps make.

Validate before you build

The App Store is not the place to test an idea: Shopify's review team only reviews production-ready apps. Test outside it first:

  1. Talk to five merchants. A Shopify Partners blog guide of February 25, 2021 asks four questions before building: does the idea solve a real merchant problem, how do merchants solve it today, will they pay, and do you have the expertise and time. It quotes Preetam Nath, co-founder of DelightChat, advising to reach out to five merchants from Facebook groups, subreddits or the forum.
  2. Ask what they use and pay today, whether a freelancer, a spreadsheet or another app. A merchant who pays nothing for a workaround is a harder sale.
  3. Put up a waiting page on your own site that describes the result, share it with those merchants, and count the emails left rather than the visits.
  4. Build a first version for one merchant. An app with custom distribution installs on a single store, or the stores of one Shopify Plus organization, without App Store review. It cannot charge through Shopify's billing, and its distribution method cannot be changed, so the public version will be a separate app.
  5. Submit the public app. Requirements are the same for an app with limited visibility, which installs from its listing link but stays out of search and category pages. Shopify's review documentation gives no duration; what developers report is in the Shopify app review process.

After launch, keep reading the same signals

The sources that gave you the idea keep moving: new apps arrive in your tag, competitors answer the reviews you read, and the changelog adds deadlines. Plan how merchants will find you with how to market a Shopify app.

Once the app is live, Luseri records every day its category rank, rating and reviews next to those of up to six competitors, and its position and theirs on up to 20 keywords you choose, so you can follow the market you entered.

Questions

What Shopify apps are in demand in 2026?
Shopify publishes no current list. It said on April 28, 2026 that active app installs grew nearly 20% in a year, and its Spring '26 Edition opened new places for apps, such as Sidekick app extensions and point of sale extensions that work offline. The most crowded tags by live apps on August 31, 2026, according to AppStorePulse, were Analytics, SEO, Chat, Shipping and Discounts, which shows competition rather than unmet demand.
How do I find a Shopify app idea?
Read the 1 to 3 star reviews of the leading apps in a category, search the Shopify Community for merchants asking whether an app exists, check how many apps each App Store tag holds, and follow Shopify's developer changelog for new APIs and deprecations. Then make sure Shopify does not already offer the feature at no extra cost.
Is the Shopify App Store too saturated for a new app?
Some tags are crowded: AppStorePulse counted 1,337 live Analytics apps on August 31, 2026, and 1,854 new apps across the App Store that month. Saturation is uneven, so count the apps in your own tag, read the reviews of its leaders and see how many hold Built for Shopify, which ranks higher in search.
Can I test a Shopify app without App Store review?
Yes, for one merchant. An app with custom distribution installs on a single store, or the stores of one Shopify Plus organization, without App Store review. It cannot charge through Shopify's billing, and its distribution method cannot be changed later.
How do Shopify apps make money?
Through Shopify's billing, which every App Store app must use. Shopify App Pricing supports free, monthly and annual plans and usage-based charges. Shopify keeps 0% of the first $1 million of lifetime revenue counted from January 1, 2025, then 15%, and a 2.9% processing fee applies to all billing.
